Essential Oils to deter Wasps!

A few days ago I was looking out my kitchen window as I was doing the dishes and I noticed a few wasps hanging around and then disappearing under the wood railings of the deck. I thought, I bet the peppermint and/or lemongrass would prevent them from building their nest there.

So I grabbed our sprayer bottle and filled it with 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water (about 8 ounces in total) and then added about 4-5mls of peppermint and 4-5mls of lemongrass (did not really measure, just wanted to make it really strong), gave it a good shake and went outside to see where their nest was. Sure enough they were building a small nest under the wood railing. So I sprayed the nest and the 2 wasps flew away from it. It has been about 5 days and they have not returned!

I ended up spraying all under the railings and in other parts of our property that have wood and signs of wasps building nest. Voila, no more wasps building nests on our deck or on the decks of our out buildings. Lesson learned: Wasps do not like peppermint and/or lemongrass!

I will continue to spray every couple of weeks just to keep them away from building nests.

  1. Hurray! Love to have a natural and safe solution to this issue.

  2. Right on! Was cleaning fish outside in my outdoor sink when dozens swarming around me. Searched online, came up with this site. Made my own in an emptied 32oz windex bottle. Same recipe as yours except I also added a few drops of clove oil on top of the lemongrass and peppermint oils. Also a drop of dishwashing liquid to disperse the oils in the vinegar and water. Safe, non-toxic… sprayed all around me and the sink…WASPS GONE IN SECONDS… an occasional (new one maybe?) popped around every once in a while… sprayed him directly and was also gone asap. Great idea, thank you, won’t ever have to work around wasps again swarming near my hands and head while cleaning my catch.

  3. I’ve got bees and wasps flying around my house above the front and back steps. Drives me crazy. Everytime I open the door or step outside, there they are. Bees and wasps swarming all around make me nervous. So I’m gonna try this today and will post my results. Thanx for this recipe.

    • Thank you Ginny. Shall look forward to hearing how it works for you…..Be sure you don’t kill the bees. They are too important for the growing plants. :-)

  4. Trying this today!!!! There are more than a dozen on or near my back deck … Which I’d really like the opportunity to enjoy this spring/summer! Thanks for the info …. Fingers crossed

  5. Can you use just lemon oil instead of lemongrass?

    • Try it and let us know how it works for you. I have not tried it yet so cannot say if it would work or not. Look forward to hearing back from you!!! Thanks for asking. – jade

  6. I’m excited to give this a try, I’m determined to get my yard back this year. Normally when summer is in full swing we watch it safely from inside… Too many wasps! and they’re mean! Thanks for posting this! I love natural fixes.
